JellyFish vs Bosso Smart Lighting: Which Permanent Lighting Fits Your Birmingham Home?

Most permanent lighting installers around Birmingham carry one system, and one system will always fit your house if it is the only one on the truck. We carry two, because Birmingham's housing is unusually varied for a metro this size, and the edge of a 1930s Mountain Brook roof and the edge of a 2015 Ross Bridge roof are not the same problem. This post puts the two systems side by side and then explains, house type by house type, how we decide.

Read that table twice and you will notice the two systems are more alike than different. Both disappear into the trim in daylight, and both run warm white on a Tuesday and crimson on a Saturday in October. What are the key differences between Bosso lighting and JellyFish lighting?

Four things separate them in practice.

The white. JellyFish makes white by mixing red, green and blue, and does it well. Bosso adds a fourth diode that is only white, so its warm white reads as an incandescent-style white rather than a blend. If your everyday plan is warm white trim on a brick Forest Park or Redmont house seen up close from a sidewalk, that difference is visible; if your plan is color, or the house sits back under trees, it is not the deciding factor.

The control. Bosso's app integrates with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri and Control4, has an AI assistant that takes plain commands like "set a Christmas theme," and can sync to music through your phone. JellyFish's cloud app is mature, reliable and controllable from anywhere, with scenes, schedules and zones. A smart-home household will feel the Bosso integration; a household that wants to open one app and tap a scene will not miss it.

The warranty shape. Both are five years on parts. JellyFish's first year is bumper-to-bumper, covering parts, labor and service. Bosso covers labor for the first year. In Birmingham the practical difference is small because New Age Lights services both systems either way.

The fixture. This is the one that decides most jobs. The two tracks have different profiles and seat differently against different fascia depths, drip edges and gutter shapes. On a deep, straight, modern fascia either one disappears. On a shallow 1920s fascia with a decorative drip edge and a half-round copper gutter, one will usually seat flush and the other will not, and you cannot tell which from a brochure.

Where JellyFish is usually the right call around Birmingham

It also answers the height problem. A three-story rear elevation over a walkout basement is normal in Hoover and Chelsea, and a gable over the entry often puts the top line out of ladder reach even at the front. Where Bosso is usually the right call around Birmingham

We fit Bosso to homes JellyFish does not suit, and in Birmingham that is not a small category. Mountain Brook, Homewood's Edgewood and Hollywood neighborhoods, and the Crestline and English Village streets are full of 1920s and 1930s brick and stone with slate and tile roofs, steep pitches and eaves that leave very little uniform fascia. On a roofline like that the question is not which system has more presets but which fixture will seat discreetly against the edge that is actually there. Sometimes that is Bosso, and when it is, we say so.

Bosso is also the stronger answer when true white matters most. In Forest Park, Highland Park and Redmont, and in Trussville's Cahaba Project, the daytime appearance of a fixture carries as much weight as the lit result, and the lit result most evenings is warm white, which a dedicated white diode renders cleaner. Is JellyFish Lighting a good company, and is Bosso lighting legit?

Both are established manufacturers with national dealer networks, published warranties and product that has been outdoors long enough to judge. JellyFish's earliest installs from 2016 are still running and the company publishes its pricing guidance openly, which is rarer than it should be. What the site visit decides

When we come out from our downtown office, the decision comes down to a short list, roughly in this order.

• Fascia depth and drip edge profile. Is there a straight, continuous surface to carry a track, and which fixture seats flush against it? On the over-the-mountain stock this alone often settles it.
• Trim color. Both tracks are color-matched. White and almond are quick; dark bronze, copper tones and painted wood are matched too, but custom JellyFish track takes one to two weeks to arrive.
• Your everyday white. If the plan is warm white most nights, we will show you both whites side by side on your own fascia.
