JellyFish Lighting uses individually addressable pucks, three LEDs each, in a color-matched track. Bosso Smart Lighting works the same way with its own fixture, four diodes per light including a dedicated true white, 256 default presets, unlimited custom presets and up to 8 zones per controller. The true-white diode matters here in a specific way: a crimson and white pattern uses a real white next to the crimson, not a blended one, and a green and gold pattern reads cleaner for the same reason.

Zones are the feature Birmingham uses most. A typical two-story in Hoover or Ross Bridge might be zoned as the main eave, the entry gable, the garage and the rear roofline. That gives you crimson across the front and warm white over the patio where you are actually sitting. What the app can and cannot do

Honest limits, because we would rather you know them before you buy.

• It cannot draw a logo, a script A or a letter. A roofline is a line. The system does solid colors, alternating patterns, chases and fades along that line, and it does them well. It does not do shapes.
• It does not follow the score. There is no feed from the game to your house. You change the scene, or a schedule does.
• Bosso can sync to sound. Music activation uses your phone's microphone to move the lights with whatever is playing, which some customers use for a fight song at kickoff. It is a party feature, not an everyday one, and it needs the phone nearby.
• Brightness is adjustable. Both systems dim, which matters on a tight Homewood street more than on a Chelsea lot with woods behind it.
• Wi-Fi matters. Bosso needs a solid Wi-Fi signal where the controller is mounted, usually the garage. We check that at the consult.
• It lights the roofline. Not the lawn, the trees, the columns or the mailbox. If your game day vision includes a lit tunnel to the front door, that is seasonal-style work on top.

Etiquette on a divided street

Birmingham streets in the fall are genuinely split, and a permanent roofline is more visible than a flag. A few practical habits keep it fun.
