Where to See Christmas Lights in Birmingham: A Local Guide

New Age Lights • September 2026 • Birmingham, AL • 6 min read

Short answer: Glow Wild at the Birmingham Zoo is the most distinctive light event in the city, built around large handcrafted lanterns rather than strand lighting. Drive through shows at the Birmingham Race Course and Alabama Adventure handle the cold and rainy nights, the villages host tree lightings through December, and the over the mountain neighborhoods carry the residential tradition. Check each venue's official site for this season's dates and tickets.

Glow Wild at the Birmingham Zoo

The Zoo's lantern celebration is the event that separates Birmingham from every other city's holiday lineup. Hundreds of handcrafted illuminated animal lanterns line a walking route through the grounds, lit from within and built at a scale that photographs do not quite convey until you are standing next to one.

What makes it different

Lantern displays read differently than strand lighting. They are sculptural, the light comes from inside the form, and the subjects range from deep sea creatures to birds. Performances typically run on the same nights, so there is more to the evening than the walk itself.

Before you go

It runs on selected nights rather than every night of the season, which makes checking the schedule more important here than at a nightly display. Tickets for December weekends go first. Confirm dates, times and tickets on the Zoo's official site.

Drive Through Shows

Birmingham is unusually well served for drive through displays. A large animated show runs at the Birmingham Race Course, and a light park operates at Alabama Adventure through the season. Both are designed to be seen from the car, generally with music synchronized on your radio.

This is the format that wins on a cold or rainy night, with very small children, or with anyone who would rather not walk a long route in December. Expect a slow crawl on peak weekends and much shorter waits midweek.

Downtown, the Villages and Tree Lightings

The downtown parks and the surrounding villages host tree lightings, markets and holiday events from late November onward, and several of the older commercial districts decorate well enough to be worth a walk on their own.

Most are single evening events, so a local calendar checked in mid November is the way to catch them rather than a list written months ahead.

Where the Neighborhood Displays Are

Over the mountain is the traditional answer for residential lights around Birmingham. Established streets with larger lots and mature trees let people build displays that read from a distance, and several blocks have participation traditions going back decades.

Finding this year's streets

Ask in a local social group in early December rather than working from a published list. The strongest streets change year to year and word travels quickly once displays are up. Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, Homewood, Hoover and Trussville all have neighborhoods that take the season seriously.

When to drive

Go on a weeknight and go early in the evening. The route is identical to a Saturday and the traffic is a fraction of it. Most displays are lit well before eight.

Practical Tips for the Season

  • Buy tickets ahead for anything ticketed, particularly December weekends.
  • Early December is calmer than the week of Christmas at every one of these, with no difference in the display.
  • On a walking route, dress warmer than the forecast suggests.
  • On a drive through, leave enough time to sit in line without anyone in the car losing patience.
  • Check whether an event runs nightly or on select nights before building an evening around it.

Putting Your Own House on the Route

The homes that draw the slow drive by are designed rather than assembled. Product cut to the roofline, even bulb spacing, hidden cords and lighting that follows the architecture is what separates them from everything else on the street.

New Age Lights takes care of the whole cycle for homes and businesses across the Birmingham area: custom design, professional installation, service through the season, takedown and offsite storage. If you are pricing a display, our guide to Christmas light installation cost in Birmingham covers what moves the number, and when to book explains why the good install dates go early.

If you want to stop repeating the exercise every year, permanent outdoor lighting stays on the house year round, disappears against the trim in daylight and changes color from an app, covering Christmas and every other night from one system.
