When to Book Christmas Light Installation in Birmingham

The season is shorter than it looks

On paper, Christmas light season is two months long. In practice the window most homeowners want is from late October, when a lit house stops looking early, to the first weekend of December, when it starts looking late. That is roughly six weeks.

Now take out the days a crew cannot use. Central Alabama is wet more than it is cold. December averages a high near 55°F and a low near 36°F, and winter is the wettest season of the year, with the rain arriving in force in November. A crew does not hang lights on a wet slate roof under a hardwood canopy in Redmont, and a lift does not stand on a soaked, sloping Chelsea lawn. The time change in early November also takes an hour of usable afternoon light out of every working day.

What is left is a finite number of dry, daylit crew-days. Each crew hangs a limited number of homes per day, and a large, detailed over-the-mountain house can take a crew the whole day. Multiply crews by usable days and that is the entire season's capacity. It is spoken for in booking order, and by the time October arrives the calendar is largely fixed. Which Birmingham properties go first

Not every house is equally sensitive to weather, so the schedule is not first-come-first-served in a simple sense. The properties that need the best conditions are scheduled into the best windows, and those are booked first.

Steep, wooded, over-the-mountain lots

Mountain Brook, Homewood and Vestavia Hills were largely built between the 1920s and the 1950s. Slate and tile roofs, steep pitches, deep decorative eaves and one of the heaviest mature tree canopies of any suburb in the South. On a house like that the clip is chosen per edge, the run is fixed to fascia and drip edge rather than clipped to a gutter, and the lift has to be placed between hardwoods on a lane that is often narrow and often sloping. It is slow, careful work, and it needs dry days and full daylight more than anything else we do. Tall newer homes on sloping lots

Hoover, Ross Bridge, Greystone and the subdivisions down 280 toward Chelsea have straight fascia that hangs quickly, but the elevations are tall. A house that presents as two stories from the street is often three at the back where the ground drops toward the trees, and the front gable over the entry is usually beyond ladder reach. Lift work needs firm, dry ground, so these are also scheduled with the weather in mind, though the hanging itself is faster than an old Tudor in Crestline.

Commercial frontages and HOA entrances

Storefronts in the Mountain Brook villages, on Homewood's 18th Street, around The Summit and Patton Creek, and HOA entrances across Shelby County are installed around trading hours and often phased across several visits. A retailer cannot lose a December Saturday and a restaurant cannot lose an evening, so these jobs eat calendar in early mornings and midweek slots. They book earliest of all. Everything else

Single-story and reachable two-story homes with simple rooflines, which describes a lot of Bluff Park, the flatter parts of Homewood, and the newer streets of Trussville, are the most flexible jobs on the board. They fill the remaining dry days through November.

What booking in September or early October buys you

• Your choice of install week. If you want the house lit for Thanksgiving weekend and the Iron Bowl, that is a late-October or early-November slot, and those go first.
• A real design. The site visit, the measurements and the layout happen without a queue behind them. You see where the run sits and how it reads from the street, and you have time to change your mind before anything is ordered.
• Product cut to your house. Commercial-grade runs are cut and fitted to your roofline, not pulled off a shelf in set lengths. That takes lead time, and early bookings get it without compressing the calendar.
• Room to move around the weather. An early booking gives the scheduler a dry day to move you to if your original date washes out. A late booking takes whatever dry day is left.

What a November caller should still do

Every year people call in the second week of November and assume the answer is no. Often it is not, but the shape of the job changes. Here is what improves your odds.

1. Call anyway, and call now. Wet days shuffle the schedule constantly. A cancellation or a rain-day reshuffle can open a slot, and you cannot get it if you are not on the list.
2. Be flexible on the date. If you can take any dry day rather than a specific Saturday, you are far easier to place.
3. Simplify the design. A clean roofline in warm white C9 goes up in a fraction of the time of a full display with wrapped trees, wreaths and garland. It also looks better than a rushed everything-at-once job. You can add the accents next year, when your measurements are already on file.
4. Ask about the reachable elevations. If the back of the house is a three-story lift job and the front is not, lighting the front this year is a reasonable compromise.
5. Take the site visit even if a date cannot be found. The design and the fixed quote will be ready before next season starts, and you will be first on the list in the spring.

January in central Alabama is wet, with the occasional ice event that turns up every few winters, so takedown runs through the month in booking order on dry days.
