Hiring a Christmas Light Installer in Birmingham: 12 Questions to Ask

Birmingham has plenty of people who will hang Christmas lights: established companies, one-truck operators, Facebook pages and gig-app listings, priced anywhere from a labor-only hang of your own strings to a full-service program. Those are not the same product, and the only way to compare them is to ask everyone the same questions. Here are the twelve we would ask, grouped by what they protect.

Questions about risk and product

1. Are you insured, and can I see it?

This is the first question because the consequences of a bad answer are the largest. Over the mountain, a two-story Tudor in Mountain Brook or a brick colonial on the Vestavia Hills crest puts a crew a long way up, on a steep pitch, often on slate. Out in Ross Bridge or Chelsea the rear elevation over a walkout basement can be three stories. If someone falls from your roof and their company is not covered, the claim can come to you. 2. Are the lights commercial-grade product you supply, or retail strings?

The difference shows up in January. Retail strings come in fixed lengths, so on a real roofline they either fall short or bunch at the corners, and their sockets and plugs are not built to survive weeks of being soaked, frozen overnight and thawed by mid-morning. Commercial-grade C9 LED on custom-cut runs is spaced evenly across the whole elevation, turns where the roof turns and keeps working through a wet central Alabama winter. Ask what product they use and whether it is cut to your house or pulled off a shelf in set lengths.

3. Who owns the lights, and what happens to them after the season?

In a lease or all-inclusive program the installer owns the product, stores it, and brings the same set back next year. If you buy, you own it and need somewhere to keep it. Neither is wrong, but you should know which one you are being quoted, because it changes the year-two price and who is responsible when a run fails. 4. What is your in-season service response, in writing?

Something will go dark at some point. A squirrel, a storm off the Gulf, a connection that took on water. The question is how fast someone comes back. For a turnkey program, 24 to 48 hours is the industry standard, and it should be in the scope rather than implied. Ask where the crew is based, too. 5. Are takedown and storage included, and when do they happen?

A display that is still up in February is a display nobody came back for. Confirm that removal is part of the price, that it happens in January in a defined order, and that storage is offsite so nothing lives in your garage. 6. Do you keep my measurements on file for next year?

A small question with a real payoff. If the installer records roofline measurements, clip types and run lengths, a rebook goes up faster the following year. It also tells you whether they expect to see you again.

Questions about how they will treat your house

7. How will you fasten to my roof edge, and will anything go through the roofing?

The correct answer is: it depends on your edge, and nothing goes through roofing material. A clip that grips a modern seamless gutter in Greystone has nothing to hold onto on a slate-roofed 1920s house in Crestline or Edgewood, where the run has to go on fascia and drip edge and be designed around deep decorative eaves. If an installer describes the same clip for every house, or mentions staples or nails, that is your answer. Ask them to point at your edge and tell you what they would use.

8. How will you reach the top of my house?

Ladders have limits, and a lot of Birmingham housing exceeds them. A gable over the entry on a Hoover two-story is usually beyond ladder reach at the front, and the rear elevation on a sloping Vestavia Hills or Chelsea lot can be a full story taller than the street suggests. Ask what access equipment they will bring, whether they have looked at where a lift can stand, and whether the quote covers the elevations you actually want lit or just the ones they can reach from the ground. 9. Have you worked under tree canopy and on slate or tile before?

Mountain Brook is famous for its hardwoods, and Homewood, Vestavia Hills and Redmont are built on the slopes of Red and Shades Mountain. Branches across a roofline change what a display looks like from the curb and, more practically, where a lift can safely stand. Slate and tile cannot be walked on casually. An installer who has done this work will talk about access before design, and will want to settle the lift position at the site visit rather than on install morning. One who has not will discover the problem on your lawn.

10. Will I see the design before you install it?

You should know where the run will sit, which elevations are included, what color and bulb type you are getting and how it will read from the street before anything is ordered. That matters everywhere, and it matters most in the historic districts, Forest Park, Highland Park and Redmont, where the fixture has to be invisible in daylight and a design that ignores the trim will look wrong from the sidewalk for six weeks. It also matters if you have an HOA in Greystone, Ross Bridge, Liberty Park or the Chelsea subdivisions with rules on color or brightness; bring them to the consult and design inside them.

11. Is the quote fixed, and when do I get it?

A professional quote comes after someone has measured the roofline, looked at the edge and checked the power, and it does not move on the invoice. Be careful with a number produced from an aerial photo. On a flat, treeless lot that can be close. On a wooded, sloping lot over the mountain it usually misses, and the correction arrives after the crew does. Ask for photos of comparable houses: a slate-roofed Tudor if that is what you own, a three-story rear elevation if that is your problem, a Cahaba Project cottage in Trussville if daytime discretion is the concern. Ask how many seasons they have been operating in Birmingham and whether they will still be answering the phone in January. If this is your third or fourth year hiring an installer for a tall, straight-fascia house in Hoover, Liberty Park or the 280 corridor, ask whether a seasonal display is still the right product.
