A Full Season of Christmas Lights in Vestavia Hills: One Home, From the First Call to This Year’s Renewal
Short Answer: Last fall a Vestavia Hills homeowner called our office with a lot of questions and a measuring tape in her hand. We sent her two designs with a price on each, she picked the fuller one, and our crew lit her front rooflines and ridgelines in warm white the week before Thanksgiving. We came back in mid-January to take it all down and store it. This October, that same display is in our warehouse getting prepped for year two. Here is what professional Christmas light installation actually looked like at each step, and what it means if you are thinking about lights for your own house on Shades Mountain this year.
The first call is mostly questions, and that is fine
Most people do not call a lighting company knowing exactly what they want. They call because a house down the street looked great last December, or because they are finished climbing ladders.
This homeowner called with price on her mind, and while she was on the phone with our office she was trying to measure her own house. We told her she could put the tape down. Measuring is our job, and on a Vestavia Hills home it is rarely as simple as the front gutter line. A lot of houses up here are seen from below as well as from the curb, which is why our Vestavia Hills page talks so much about rooflines and slope.
She also asked about icicle lights, then called back about ten minutes later to take that idea off the table. That is completely normal. Half of the first conversation is narrowing things down.
Two options, a price on each
Instead of one take-it-or-leave-it quote, our office built mock-ups from the clearest photo of the house we could find and sent her two proposals. Each one showed what the display would look like and what it would cost.
Not every house needs a site visit. When the roofline reads clearly from photos, we can design and price it without coming out. When it does not, because of slope, access, tree cover or an edge that needs a closer look, we come out for a free on-site consult before anything is quoted. Her house was straightforward enough to start from a photo.
That format does a lot of work. You are not guessing what a bigger number buys you, and you are not negotiating against yourself. You can see the difference between a front roofline and a front roofline plus the upper ridges, then decide whether the extra footage is worth it on your house. If you want the longer version of what moves that number, our Birmingham Christmas light cost guide breaks it down.
She called back the same evening and chose the fuller design: warm white along the front rooflines and the ridgelines. Warm white is the most common pick we see on brick and stone over the mountain, and our Christmas light design ideas post gets into why warm versus cool white matters more than people expect.
Before install day: the small details that save a callback
Two things happened before our crew ever showed up.
First, she told our office she wanted the lights plugged into the garage outlet. That went straight onto the appointment notes, along with a reminder to call her when the crew arrived. It sounds minor. It is the difference between a display that runs where you want it and one that runs off whatever outlet the crew found first. As long as there is an exterior power connection, the Christmas light installation itself does not require you to be home.
Second, Brandon Robertson, who runs our installs, texted her to confirm the Tuesday slot and a rough arrival around 10 a.m. She was happy with that, since she is not an early riser. The night before, she texted to make sure we were still coming. Also normal, and we would rather get that text than have someone wondering.
Weather is the other piece. The National Weather Service in Birmingham notes that some of our wetter winter months see roughly twice the rain of October, which is typically the driest month of the year here. The same office puts Birmingham’s average first freeze around November 9, so by mid-November a crew is working around cold mornings and rain days at the same time. Every rain day pushes somebody’s install, and that is exactly why the schedule tightens as the season goes on.
Install day
The crew lit the front rooflines and the ridgelines, tested every section, and wrapped up by early afternoon on that Tuesday. No one had to find a ladder or untangle anything in the garage. Her house was lit two days before the city held its tree lighting at City Hall, which is about as good as timing gets in Vestavia Hills.
That is a big part of why people hire this out in the first place. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has reported that falls are the most common holiday decorating injury treated in emergency rooms, and a two-story front on a sloped Vestavia Hills lot is not where you want to learn that. OSHA’s ladder safety guide and the University of Florida’s summary of portable ladder rules both come back to the same basics: the right ladder for the job, set on stable and level footing. That is hard to manage on a hillside driveway in the cold. Even the strands matter, and Mississippi State’s holiday safety newsletter reminds people to check that a set is actually rated for outdoor use. Our DIY vs. professional Christmas lights post covers the houses where doing it yourself still makes sense.
A couple of days later, she sent our office her honest take. She said the crew did an excellent job and carried themselves professionally, the office team was outstanding, and being offered two options with the price on both was exactly what she wanted. That last part is the one we keep coming back to. People do not want to be sold. They want to see the choices clearly.
Mid-January: takedown and storage
In mid-January, the crew came back and took the display down. The lights went into storage, and her measurements stayed on file. Nothing ended up in her garage, and nothing got crushed in a bin until next year.
We wrote a full post on what happens to your lights after the holidays, so we will not repeat it here. The short version is that takedown is part of the same job, not an afterthought.
This fall: the renewal
In late September, Martin on our office team sent her a renewal proposal with returning-customer pricing. In early October, our owner followed up with a quick note: the team was in the warehouse getting her display ready, most installs happen in October, and she would not have to turn the lights on until she was ready. The only real question was whether she wanted the same warm white rooflines and ridgelines again or wanted to add something.
She is on the books for early November.
That is the part of a Christmas light renewal most people do not think about. Year two is easier than year one. The design is already settled, the measurements are on file, and the same set comes back out of storage. The biggest decision you make the second year is whether to add a section.
Not every Vestavia Hills job is a roofline
A couple of seasons ago, another Vestavia Hills homeowner a short drive away wanted exactly one thing: a small tree beside her wooded driveway wrapped in lights. She texted us a photo of the tree, and that was enough to plan it.
Rain moved her install twice that week, so the crew slid her into a weekday afternoon. She did not need to be home. That night she sent us a photo of the tree glowing at the end of the drive and said it looked whimsical, which is about the best review a tree wrap can get.
Small jobs like that are worth calling about. On the older, more wooded streets near the crest, a well-placed seasonal display often does more than a full roofline would, and our Vestavia Hills page is honest about when that is the better answer. If you want ideas from houses that pull it off, our guide to the best Christmas light displays around Birmingham is a good place to start.
What this season says about timing
Brandon put it plainly when we talked about this season: the busier the calendar gets, the less flexible pricing becomes. And a display that goes up in mid-December gives you a couple of weeks of use for the same cost that early November buys you close to two months.
The homeowner in this story did not have to think about any of that the second time around. Her lights go up early, they stay off until she flips them on, and the date was settled before Halloween. If you want the full season math, including what to do if you are already late, read when to book Christmas light installation in Birmingham and the booking answer on our FAQ page.
One more weather note. Central Alabama Decembers can be truly soggy. The Alabama state climatologist’s office at UAH documented a December when stations around the state set rainfall records. That is the kind of month that makes a dry November install day worth a lot.
Seasonal now, permanent later?
Some homeowners do a few seasons of traditional lights and then decide they want the roofline lit year-round. If you are already wondering about that, our permanent vs. seasonal Christmas lights comparison runs the five-year numbers honestly, and you can see how JellyFish permanent lighting works on Birmingham homes. For plenty of houses on Shades Mountain, seasonal is still the right call, and we will tell you that.
Thinking about your own house this year?

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to be home for Christmas light installation in Vestavia Hills?
No, you do not have to be home as long as the house has an exterior power connection the crew can use. If you want the lights plugged into a specific outlet, like the garage, tell the office ahead of time so it goes on the appointment notes.
Can my Christmas lights go up in October if I do not want them on until later?
Yes, lights installed in October or early November can stay off until you are ready to turn them on. Installing early protects your spot on the calendar without starting the season before you want to.
What happens to my Christmas lights after the holidays?
The crew comes back after the holidays, usually in January, to take the display down and store it until next season. Your measurements stay on file so the next install goes faster.
Do returning customers have to redesign their Christmas lights every year?
No, returning customers can keep the same design and simply confirm it before the season. A Christmas light renewal usually comes down to one question: keep the display as it was or add a section.
Can I hire a professional to wrap just one tree?
Yes, a single tree wrap is a normal seasonal job, and a photo of the tree is often enough to plan it. On wooded Vestavia Hills lots, one lit tree along a driveway can make a bigger impression than a full roofline.
